PORT MORESBY (July 10, 2012): When JDA Wokman Velosi employee, Martha Okoa, takes annual leave this month, she will embark on a holiday with a civic purpose and represent Papua New Guinea (PNG) on the international stage. Ms Okoa – a Senior Contracts Officer for PNG’s recruitment specialists, JDA Wokman Velosi -- has been selected to represent PNG as a Peace Ambassador for the 24th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) in Fukuoka, Japan. The APCC is a civic organisation funded by local governments. It embraces the concept of cultural interaction amongst children from different backgrounds and countries, working to promote world peace and cultivate an appreciation of differences and similarities. A former junior APCC delegate, Ms Okoa said the movement works to foster friendships at every level and promote understanding in and between participating countries, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. “It is hoped that the omoiyari friendships formed by children under the junior APCC umbrella will last a lifetime and contribute to cultural harmony in the future,” she said. “My experience as a junior delegate in 1996 sparked an interest in breaking down cultural barriers that is still with me to this day.” Asked what she brings to the role of APCC Peace Ambassador, Ms Okoa said: “I think it gives me a chance to express my individuality, my love for different cultures and the spirit of true friendship. “When I return from Japan I hope to use my experience to help break down our own cultural barriers – it’s not an easy task for a country with hundreds of languages and complicated cultures but we have to try. “Of course we have to learn, teach and keep our cultures and languages alive but we must look beyond them if we are to become one nation,” she said. There is currently no APCC presence in PNG but a preliminary meeting held last month generated interest and paperwork has been submitted to establish a recognised branch.
